'Kolaveri Di' is a rage: 14 million hits and counting

The track from the Tamil film 3 has become an overnight sensation online. The Guide spoke to its young music director on why the track has created a buzz across the country

"Believe it or not, it was all impromptu, " says 21-year-old Anirudh Ravichander, music director of the superhit song, Why This Kolaveri Di for the Tamil movie 3.

The video, which was released on November 16 by Sony Music, already has 14 million hits and counting.

The song has (despite its lyrics claiming to be a 'flop song') already gone viral on YouTube and social networking sites, becoming one of the top trending topics on Twitter.

"I didn't expect it to become such a huge hit, " says the music director. So much so, even Amitabh Bachchan has tweeted about it: "Just heard Kolaveri after much talk on it... it's so original and catchy...congrats Dhanush and Aishwarya... love (sic)".

The debutant music director, who is fresh out of graduation college (he completed a BCom course from Loyola in Chennai), is lapping it all up. "I am on cloud nine, " he says.

But he isn't going overboard. "I have another nine songs to go and want to give them my best, " says Ravichander. The youngster is already getting many offers, including a few from Bollywood. But right now, 3 is his priority. "This (the movie project) is like my baby. I want to give it my complete attention, " he claims.

The song emerged, literally, out of the blue. The tune, claims Ravichander, came to him in five minutes flat. "The director (Aishwarya Dhanush) gave me the situation. Dhanush sir came after 10-15 minutes and started singing it, " he says. Dhanush gave the lyrics on the spot and since the casual usage of English gelled with the mood of the song, they decided to retain it for the entire song.

Incidentally, Ravichander had Dhanush in mind when he was composing the song. "He has a raw voice which would suit the song. He sounds like a common man, who enjoys singing. When he started singing, Why this kolaveri kolaveri kolaveri di? we knew we were on right track, " he says.

The tune was composed to make the song sound catchy. The lyrics fit the sequence in the movie in which a boy expresses his feelings about failing in love.

Sung in far-from-correct English with a heavy South Indian accent and everyday words like "holy cow", the video shows Shruti Hassan, Dhanush, Aishwarya Dhanush and Ravichander recording the song in a studio and having a great time doing it.

Apart from the heavy South Indian accent and the way the song is sung, there is nothing remarkable about the "Soup song" as it has come to be known. "It is funny because the lyrics have no meaning whatsoever. We had a ball while recording it, " recalls Ravichander.

The music is a blend of South Indian rhythm, with guitar and saxophone. "It is like a nursery rhyme, " adds Ravichander who till now had only composed music for short films.

New Lightning-Fast, Efficient Nanoscale Data Transmission

New Lightning-Fast, Efficient Nanoscale Data Transmission

A team at Stanford's School of Engineering has demonstrated an ultrafast nanoscale light-emitting diode (LED) that is orders of magnitude lower in power consumption than today's laser-based systems and is able to transmit data at the very rapid rate of 10 billion bits per second. The researchers say it is a major step forward in providing a practical ultrafast, low-power light source for on-chip data transmission.

Stanford's Jelena Vuckovic, an associate professor of electrical engineering, and Gary Shambat, a doctoral candidate in electrical engineering, announced their device in a research paper in the journal Nature Communications.

Vuckovic had earlier this year produced a nanoscale laser that was similarly efficient and fast, but that device operated only at temperatures below 150 degrees Kelvin, about minus-190 degrees Fahrenheit, making it impractical for commercial use. The new device operates at room temperature and could, therefore, represent an important step toward next-generation computer chips.

"Low-power, electrically controlled light sources are vital for next-generation optical systems to meet the growing energy demands of the computer industry," said Vuckovic. "This moves us in that direction significantly."

Single-mode light

The LED in question is a "single-mode LED," a special type of diode that emits light more or less at a single wavelength, similarly to a laser.

"Traditionally, engineers have thought only lasers can communicate at high data rates and ultralow power," said Shambat. "Our nanophotonic, single-mode LED can perform all the same tasks as lasers, but at much lower power."

Nanophotonics is key to the technology. In the heart of their device, the engineers have inserted little islands of the light-emitting material indium arsenide, which, when pulsed with electricity, produce light. These "quantum dots" are surrounded by photonic crystal -- an array of tiny holes etched in a semiconductor. The photonic crystal serves as a mirror that bounces the light toward the center of the device, confining it inside the LED and forcing it to resonate at a single frequency.

"In other words, it becomes single-mode," said Shambat.

"Without these nanophotonic ingredients -- the quantum dots and the photonic crystal -- it is impossible to make an LED efficient, single-mode and fast all at the same time," said Vuckovic.

Engineering ingenuity

The new device includes a bit of engineering ingenuity, too. Existing devices are actually two devices, a laser coupled with an external modulator. Both devices require electricity. Vuckovic's diode combines light transmission and modulation functions into one device, drastically reducing energy consumption.

In tech-speak, the new LED device transmits data, on average, at 0.25 femto-joules per bit of data. By comparison, today's typical "low" power laser device requires about 500 femto-joules to transmit the same bit.

"Our device is some 2,000 times more energy efficient than best devices in use today," said Vuckovic.

Stanford Professor James S. Harris, former PhD student Bryan Ellis and doctoral candidates Arka Majumdar, Jan Petykiewicz and Tomas Sarmiento also contributed to this research.

India needs 4 million civil engineers by 2020: Report

India needs 4 million civil engineers by 2020: Report

Despite a projected demand of 95 billion sq ft in real estate and construction by 2020, the sector faces a likely manpower crisis. A research report 'Real Estate and Construction Professionals in India by 2020' by RICS ( Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) indicates a probable demand-supply gap of 44 million core professionals comprising civil engineers, architects and planners, by 2020.

The research has highlighted that as of 2011, the supply of professionals in built environment comprises nearly 50 million people, of which only 2 million are professionally qualified (across core and non core professionals). The remaining are mainly unskilled workers.

Built environment, comprising construction and real estate related activities, is one of the major contributors to the Indian economy, accounting for approximately 17.7% of GDP in 200910.

There is a demand-supply gap in the range of 82-86% in the core professions group comprising civil engineers, architects and planners. To deliver potential real estate space and planned infrastructure, India needs nearly 4 million civil engineers, 396,000 architects and 119,000 planners on an average, over the next decade. However the corresponding average supply available would only be 642,000 civil engineers, 65,000 architects and 18,000 planners.

A sustained period of shortfall in annual supply, coupled with an increasing year on year demand, could result in a cumulative demand of nearly 45 million core professionals, over 2010-20, with a cumulative demand-supply gap of approximately 44 million core professionals over the same period.

The estimated supply of non core professionals in the built environment sector is nearly 3 times the supply of core professionals. However without sector specific training, they fall short of the desired skill sets and need training.

The shortages are likely to lead to recruitment difficulties, increased cost of human resources, inability to complete tasks timely, skill gaps in domestic manpower and sub-standard quality of construction.

The report recommends that all stakeholders across government, academia and industry formulate remedial measures that help increase new supply and up-skilling of the existing workforce. The key action areas recommended for the government are improvement in regulatory framework and enabling policies, strengthening skill development effort and allocation of funds and incentivising skill development in critical areas.
