Dell Introduces De-dupe Appliance, Moves Compellent To 64-bit Software


Dell has introduced its de-duplication appliance based on its Ocarina technology and upgraded the software for its enterprise-class Compellent storage line with 64-bit technology.

The moves, along with others including a new storage solution for Microsoft SharePoint and new storage support for its own Force10 and for Brocade technology, were unveiled at the Dell Storage Forum in London.


The updates to Dell's storage lines came in the wake of several acquisitions in the last couple of years which have turned Dell from a developer of low-end storage and a reseller of EMC's enterprise storage to one of the top providers of enterprise-class storage based on its own intellectual property.


“As a result, Dell now has a number of different technologies which it can start applying across its multiple storage lines,” said Mike Davis, Director, Product Marketing, NAS and Back-up Storage Products, Dell.


"It will be a long process to bring these together with a common management platform. It is part of our five-year storage roadmap," said Davis.


Dell has already taken its first step toward unifying its storage technologies. The company in October started integrating networking technology from its August acquisition of networking vendor Force10 Networks into its Dell vStart virtualization infrastructure offering and added compression technology from its July, 2010 acquisition of Ocarina Networks into its DX Object storage platform.


At the London event, Dell unveiled Compellent Storage Center 6.0, the first major upgrade of the Compellent storage array's operating system since Dell acquired Compellent last year.


“The biggest change is transition from the previous 32-bit architecture to a new 64-bit architecture,” said Bob Fine, Director, Product Marketing, Dell Compellent.


“The new code base is also more agile than in the past with the ability to upgrade to new protocols such as SAS and FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) via plug-in cards,” he added.


Dell has also added integration with CommVault's data protection software to provide improved resiliency of data stored on Compellent hardware.


“Also new with Dell Compellent is enhanced integration with VMware for virtualized data center environments. This includes the addition of VMware vSphere storage APIs to speed up the deployment of virtual machines and significantly improve storage performance for data volumes shared by multiple virtual machines,” said Fine.


“The arrays also now support VMware's Site Recovery Manager (SRA) 5 for automated failback from a disaster, as well as VMware technology for managing Compellent virtualized storage pools,” he added.


Dell also used the London event to introduce its first de-dupe appliance based on its Ocarina technology. That device, the DR4000, decreases disk capacity requirements by up to a factor of 15 times, and provides inline de-dupe and compression and replication of de-duped data. It provides backup storage for as low as 25 cents per GB list price, Dell said.


“The DR4000 targets the backup needs of remote and branch offices as well as traditional businesses,” Davis said. “Therefore, it is really focused on the channel.”


The DR4000 is not Dell's first de-dupe appliance. The company also offers the DL2200, an appliance built around CommVault's Simpana de-dupe application.


“Going forward, Dell plans to increase the capacity of the DR4000, and integrate its capabilities with Dell's EqualLogic and Compellent product lines and the Dell cloud,” said Davis.

Dell also unveiled its new Dell solution for Microsoft SharePoint Infrastructure Optimization, which combines Dell DX storage appliances; Dell Microsoft SharePoint assessment, design, and deployment services; and the AvePoint DocAve software for managing migration and other features.


“The result is an integrated solution for SharePoint lifecycle management and migration that improves capacity utilization, performance, business continuity, and compliance,” said Davis.


Dell also validated its Dell Force10 S481010-Gbit Ethernet switch and its deep-buffer S60 1-Gbit/10-Gbit Ethernet switches for its EqualLogic storage appliance line, giving the EqualLogic auto-recognition and auto-configuration features.


Dell also integrated support for its Dell PowerConnect 8024 10GB switches and M8024-k Blade IO modules in its Compellent array lines to integrate them in the field in a single step.


Also new is support for Brocade's new 16GB Fibre Channel infrastructure with its Compellent line.


Dell's new Compellent Storage Center 6.0 software and DR4000 dedupe appliance are slated to be released sometime this calendar quarter.

Sony has taken it’s time to come up with a tablet




Sony
has become the new entrant in the booming tablet computer market with two models, named the Tablet S and the Tablet P. Sony’s entry into this market is a good two years behind the Apple iPad which created the market and continues to dominate it with market shares upward of 75 percent.

There are now over a dozen makes in the market including Samsung, Motorola, blackberry, and HP. The tablet computer market is however booming with 2012 sales expected to top 100 million units, growing 50 percent over 2011. Sony’s late entry will therefore not be a problem in this boom market. Sony, given its iconic image in consumer electronics, cannot come out with a me-too product and the tablet S and the tablet P are distinctive products with some compelling features. The Sony tablet S is priced at around $500, the same level as the iPad, signaling that there is, as yet, no call for a price based market positioning.

Wedge shaped shape

To begin with, the Sony tablet S has an unusual wedge shape, with a thickness of 0.3 inch at the thin edge and 0.79 inch at the thick edge. This shape has been described as that of a magazine folded open. Sony claims that the wedge shape makes it easier to hold the tablet as the weight distribution reduces wrist strain, though the Sony tablet weighs the same 1.33 pounds as the iPad. More practically, the wedge shape permits the tablet screen to be visible and usable when laid on the table which is a problem with every other tablet. The casing is in black textured plastic which looks elegant. The tablet has a 9.4 inch screen, similar to the iPad’s 9.7 inch.

The tablet P is hinged and has dual 5.5 inch screens that can be used independently or configured as a single screen. The folding feature makes the tablet P more convenient to carry in the pocket. The LCD displays incorporate Sony’s TrueBlack technology used in HD TVs to improve clarity. The capacitive touch screen has been tweaked to improve response to finger movements. Both front and back cameras are built-in. The front camera is for video conferencing and the 5 megapixel back camera for still and video photography.

Android operating system

The tablet uses the android 3.2 honeycomb operating system. Trade circles, however, claim that this will soon be upgraded to the new android 4.0 operating system. The android operating system is continually being upgraded but lacks the completeness of Apple’s iOS system, which is the major, plus point of the iPad. The Sony tablets use the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor with 1 GHz clock speed. It has a built in 1 GB memory expandable to 16 or 32 GB through memory cards. The expanded memory is however only partially usable as about half of it is lost in file configuration.

Interesting additional uses

Sony has capitalized on its entertainment electronics repertoire to build in two interesting features. One is the ability to use the tablets as a universal remote that can control TV sets, the home theater system, blu-ray players, and DVD players of all makes. The Sony tablet is also designed for use as a Play Station terminal which should make it hugely popular with gaming enthusiasts, as Sony is the leader in this segment. A thoughtful minor feature is that the Sony tablet can be propped on a stand on the tabletop to display a clock face or to be used as an electronic picture frame.

Access to Sony’s cloud based content

Sony has built-in its own music player into the tablets, which is superior to the android music player. The tablets also have access to Sony’s cloud based Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited stores and in the future could have greater access to the Play Station gaming modules to make the Sony tablets approach the Apple iPad level of integration of hardware, software and services which is the benchmark to which other tablets have to measure up.

IBM Global Financing to Help Small Companies in India Grow


IBM demonstrated its commitment to small and medium businesses in India today by making available interest free financing on IBM software products. Credit-qualified businesses can now acquire this interest-free financing in India through IBM Global Financing, the company’s lending and leasing organization.

According to the most recent census data, small and medium businesses in India employ almost 60 million people spread over 26 million enterprises. In terms of economic value, this represents about 45% of the manufacturing output and around 40% of total exports of India.

But despite their important contribution to the nation's economy, mid-market companies in India frequently do not get adequate support from banks and other financial institutions. This limited access to capital and knowledge restricts use of innovative technology which translates to constraints on modernization and expansion.


IBM Global Financing is offering 0 percent financing on IBM Software purchases through December 31, 2011. For a client to determine their quarterly payments, they simply can take the total of their IBM Software purchase and divide by four. The program is designed to help spur innovation and drive economic growth by making capital and credit more easily accessible.

In addition, IBM announced earlier this year the availability of US$1 billion in financing, targeted directly at SMBs globally. This initiative will enable mid-market companies to take advantage of advanced technologies such as business analytics, robust network security and cloud, capabilities which have previously only been accessible to large enterprise customers

Profound change for Facebook set to 'lock in' users

Facebook on Friday begins rolling out its biggest ever shake-up, in a move observers say will not only profoundly alter how its 800 million users interact with the site, but will keep them coming back for decades to come.
The new 'Timeline', revealed last week by chief executive Mark Zuckerberg will also likely shock some users, notorious for backlashes in recent years over even small adjustments to the site, let alone a complete re-think of how their lives are presented to the world.
The changes amount to the 'heart of your Facebook experience, completely rethought from the ground up', Zuckerberg told an annual developers conference.
Rick Marini, CEO of the Facebook-focused 'career network' BranchOut, which itself boasts millions of users, marveled this week in a conference call with marketers and reporters how the site had managed to build an enduring model.
"If your Timeline becomes an important part of your life - the diary of your life - Facebook may have just locked people in for the next 20 years," Marini said on Wednesday.
If Facebook is 'where all of this happens, all your pictures, all your video, everything you've ever done', he added: 'you're never going to leave'.
Zuckerberg said his team's main aim was 'to design a place that feels like your home', prompting Forrester analyst Sean Corcoran to note that Facebook was 'positioning itself as not just your social graph online, but your life online'.
Pete Cashmore, founder of influential tech blog Mashable, this week anticipated the expected response from users in an article for CNN.com under the blunt headline, 'You'll freak when you see the new Facebook'.
The move, Cashmore said, would be likely jarring at first for millions of people who visit the site every day.
But when they see their lives laid out before them in a neat, single page, they will realise Facebook has 'unleashed something so remarkable that you didn't even recognise it at first: A meaningful social network', he wrote.
Observers saw a clear challenge to ubiquitous search giant Google, as 27-year-old Zuckerberg explained that the site he launched from his Harvard dormitory room in 2004 sought to be a central hub for the Internet.
The overhauled 'Timeline' profile pages, as users will see as it opens up to the world on Friday, with access further expanded in coming weeks, shows that the social network behemoth has saved everything that's ever been uploaded.
Mapping people's lives - through photos, videos, status updates, comments, and even 'likes' of specific content - the new Facebook catalogues it all, literally from the beginning: scrolling to the bottom, every user's Timeline kicks off with an entry for their birth.
"Timeline is the story of your life," the young CEO announced last week with a barely contained sense of glee.
Yet apart from a relatively small number of industry geeks who followed the Zuckerberg announcement last week, the vast majority of 800 million users have little idea of the extent of the changes afoot the next time they log on.

WORLDS SAFEst CAR with Electronic Defense System




There’s only a handful of countries known for building cars. Most of them are in Europe or the Far East.  Colonel Muammar Gaddafi wants to add Libya to that list, and this is what he’s cooked up to do it.  Called the Libyan Rocket, the car was designed to solve the problem of high instance of road deaths in the north African country.  Gaddafi’s people say it’s the safest car ever made, but don’t go into any details to back up the claim.  Still, the Colonel’s revolutionary government is building a plant in Tripoli to put it together.
Gaddafi’s car seats five, has a 230-hp V6 and the nose and tail of a rocket. The Libyan Rocket does come with airbags, an electronic defense system and collapsible bumpers that supposedly help out in a crash. So what is the “electronic defense system”? Apparently, nobody knows what it is or how it works. So even the secret is safe with this car!
You may want to add some diamond studded rims complete with their own bodyguard if you want to make this car even safer.

Mercedes-Benz F 125! looks like the future, runs on hydrogen

As expected, the feature concept car being shown by Mercedes-Benz at Frankfurt this year was the F 125! But Merc isn't actually calling it a concept, rather a "research vehicle" that will help the company work toward a gasoline-free future. In this case it's a hydrogen-filled future, with this car running on compressed gas and so giving off only water vapor and oxygen as emissions. But, it's also a plug-in, meaning you can charge this thing up on your garage in addition to topping off the tank at your local H2 filling station -- at some point in the future when you actually have an H2 filling station. Read on for more details.

Electricity is stored in a new 10kWh lithium-sulphur battery pack and the hydrogen gets pumped into carbon fiber tanks integrated into the bodyshell, combining to give a healthy 1,000km (621 mile) range. On the outside, the "trailblazing" exterior borrows a page from the classic Gullwing Mercedes cars of the past, but this is a much larger four-seater than the 'ol 300SL. It's also said to use 3D projectors for displaying of navigation and other driver information (not unlike Pioneer's Android-powered prototype) and the F 125! can even drive itself -- a requirement of any self-respecting car of the future.


Inside the swanky blue and cream interior lies an infotainment system that will sync with your media services in the cloud, letting you pick up on your favorite playlist right where you left off, everything controlled exclusively by your voice -- though a center console touchpad can be used if you prefer. The car will also push vehicle information to the cloud, so instead of wondering how much gas you've got left in the tanks you can just check on your phone.

Performance is expected to be quite good, making the run to 62MPH in 4.9 seconds and sprinting up to a more than adequate top speed of 137. Mercedes-Benz assures this is all quite possible and that we may see this very car in production -- but not for another 15 years or so. Yeah, patience never was our strong suit either.

In the F 125! Mercedes-Benz rigorously follows its vision of emission-free driving with hydrogen power, underlining the potential of H2 as an energy source for the future. While previous Mercedes-Benz research vehicles have "looked ahead" by roughly one vehicle generation - seven to eight years - the F 125! as the latest technological visionary goes a whole step further, by more than two generations to the year 2025 and beyond.

"With the F 125! we want to show that large, comfortable and safe saloon cars have an excellent future, partly because they are able to operate with no emissions. The legend that is the S-Class will continue into the future thanks to intelligent solutions that always have the customer's needs in mind," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "The new research vehicle illustrates and underlines this claim to leadership with innovative ideas and traditional Mercedes strengths in the areas of design, safety, comfort and performance."

Innovative ideas reaffirm the claim to leadership in the luxury segment

The F 125! demonstrates how completely emission-free, individual mobility might be realised in the luxury segment in the future. The researchers and developers at Mercedes-Benz have incorporated already well-proven concepts and technologies which are not yet available today, but for which basic research has shown great future promise, and therefore a realistic chance of implementation in future series-production cars. The decisive innovations are:

• A logical further development of the fuel cell drive system in combination with plug-in technology

• Revolutionary tank technology: the structure integrated hydrogen composite storage unit.

• Lighter and more powerful batteries, in this case based on lithium-sulphur technology, which Mercedes-Benz is examining in parallel with further development of the current lithium-ion battery and research into lithium-air technology.

On this basis the F 125! was created as an innovative four-seater luxury saloon with a powerful, emission-free electric drive system based on the fuel cell technology developed to series production maturity by Mercedes-Benz. This study combines pioneering and highly efficient storage, drive and bodyshell technologies with unique control and display concepts. The research vehicle also presents itself with an expressive design which transfers the classic Mercedes design idiom into the future.

Highlights of the F 125!:

• Completely emission-free mobility with a range of up to 1000 kilometres,

full day-to-day suitability, superior performance and first-class comfort.

• A bodyshell of innovative, lightweight hybrid construction with a high proportion of fibre-reinforced plastics and an intelligent mix of carbon-fibre, aluminium and high-strength steels, which allows a significant weight reduction while offering a further considerable improvement in safety. A high-strength construction with crash-responsive protective systems within the doors allows the omission of B-pillars, as well as the use of wide gull-wing doors which allow convenient access to the four seats. In this way the Mercedes-Benz safety philosophy and in particular the decisive principle of the rigid passenger cell developed by Béla Barényi in 1952 are being concertedly taken forward for the future of individual mobility.

• A high-voltage lithium-sulphur battery with a specific energy density of

350 Wh per kg at cell level, which allows considerably higher recuperation rates in combination with the e4MATIC all-wheel drive.

• A control and display concept based on touch, speech and hand-gestures makes the F 125! a true "companion" with whom the driver is able to interact flexibly and effortlessly. The gull-wing doors of light-weight CRP construction can also be opened and closed by hand-gestures.

• Highly attractive displays using 3D and projector-beam technology to open up new visual possibilities.

• Next-generation, substantially networked telematics allow internet-based voice control, integration into social media and extensive remote control of vehicle settings and entertainment functions.

• Innovative assistance systems for lasting driver stress relief, e.g. Advanced Driving Assist for semi-autonomous driving.

• Trailblazing exterior and interior design based on a completely new saloon architecture.

Revolutionary: structural integrated hydrogen composite storage unit

To store the hydrogen as the fuel of the future, Mercedes engineers adapted a technology which is still the object of basic research. This opens up completely new perspectives with respect to the vehicle architecture and operating range. "The structural integrated hydrogen composite unit of the F 125! represents a real technological revolution, as it allows the hydrogen tank to be fully integrated into the bodyshell structure for the first time. In the future, vehicles with emission-free fuel cell drive systems could achieve the operating ranges of current diesel models with no loss of interior space," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber. Based on the current level of know-how, Mercedes specialists consider it possible that they may develop this technology to series production level from 2025.

The tank integrated into the floor assembly has a capacity of around 7.5 kg

of hydrogen. Compared to the high-pressure tanks in use today, the H2 tank potentially requires less installation space. This is because to withstand a pressure of up to 700 bar, current tanks need to be cylindrical in shape, and owing to this round cross-section there are inevitably "cavities" between tanks installed next to or above each other. In contrast, tanks that can be filled at a pressure of 30 bar or less can be better integrated into the bodyshell. At the same time they are able to act as "structural" components.

Lithium-sulphur battery: compact and powerful

A highly advanced, very powerful lithium-sulphur battery is envisaged for the

F 125!. It has a storage capacity of 10 kWh and is installed behind the rear seats. Combining the fuel cell drive system with the innovative lithium-sulphur battery makes a total operating range of up to 1000 km possible, of which up to 50 km can be under battery-electric power alone. It can be inductively charged at "intelligent" charging stations, and the convenient charging process can be monitored by smartphone. When designing the F 125!, the developers worked on the assumption that by the time of its introduction into series production, this battery type will be capable of energy densities up to 350 Wh per kg. This would represent roughly a doubling of current performance. The real potentials of this technology are however the subject of basic research, and are still difficult to assess at present.

Further development of the fuel cell as an energy source

At the heart of the drive system lies a particularly powerful further development of the Mercedes-Benz fuel cell stack which has demonstrated its efficiency and day-to-day suitability e.g. in the successful B-Class F-CELL World Drive this year.

On 29 January, marking the 125th birthday of the automobile, Mercedes-Benz commenced the first circumnavigation of the globe with fuel cell powered electric cars in Stuttgart - covering more than 30,000 kilometres on four continents and through 14 countries. The three fuel cell powered B-Class cars and their backup vehicles returned safely to Stuttgart 125 days later.

The stack in the F 125!, which is further improved with respect to performance, consumption and practical suitability, provides the power for four powerful electric motors installed near the wheels, which ensure sporty, superior performance figures. All in all the modular e4MATIC system, which also uses improved drive components from the SLS AMG E-CELL, generates a continuous output of 170 kW (231 hp) and a peak output of 230 kW (313 hp).

This accelerates the F 125! to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 220 km/h. Nonetheless, NEDC fuel consumption is only 0.79 kilograms of hydrogen per 100 kilometres (= 2.7 litres diesel equivalent).

Always online, always connected: "@yourCOMAND"

With the visionary infotainment system "@yourCOMAND", the F 125! provides an outlook on future Mercedes-Benz telematic systems. Its trailblazing features include:

In Natural Handling, operation is substantially by natural speech supplemented with touch and intuitive hand-gestures. In the interests of maximum driver-fitness and operating safety, the F 125! becomes the perfect, always alert companion for its driver and passengers. The possibilities go well beyond those of current systems. The driver can e.g. request news items that are tailored to his personal needs, and make specific, contextual enquiries, without removing his hands from the wheel. The COMAND of tomorrow also becomes proactive.

In the future, the driver will be able to start with the traffic report or retrieve personal messages before the selected music programme begins. The weather report will then automatically come on before the journey ends, for example. Thanks to the mood-based configuration function "Moods", such individual adjustments will be completed in a matter of seconds in future. The F125! also opens up completely new dimensions when it comes to external communication and the use of social networks. With the help of the Social Community Assistant, the driver alone can decide who is allowed to "disturb" him, or who receives information.

Thanks to the Seamless Experience functions, the multimedia systems of the F 125! are seamlessly and cross-functionally networked, socially interactive and non-distracting. The exchange of information is no longer impeded or interrupted on journeys, but is an integral part of the concept. Because of constant connectivity with the Cloud, the driver has seamless access to all the media he normally uses. The tedious synchronisation of different communication and entertainment devices is also completely eliminated. The so-called "digital lifestyle" of many customers can therefore be continued both seamlessly and safely when on board.

Sensory Perfection in the F 125! means high-end sound and high-resolution screens with brilliant, individual displays. If required, the autostereoscopic 3D display for spatial representation of the instrument cluster is able to show relevant information in clustered form. The 3D image adapts natural visual habits, allows a better overview and thus relieves the driver of stress. The head unit in the upper section of the centre console uses projector-beam technology, and is controlled via a touchpad with 3D fingertracking located within easy reach of the driver. In addition to the head unit, the integrated selection bar enables the instrument cluster and rear-view display to be selected. Activated in this way, these displays can also be centrally operated. A further, retractable 17-inch display is installed on the front passenger side, and this is fully controlled by hand gestures. In this way a rear passenger can select his personal film programme with no physical contact.

A high-resolution wide-image display allows the entire traffic situation behind the vehicle to be conveniently monitored, and makes exterior mirrors unnecessary. The image is adapted to human perceptive powers at all times, and once again provides a much clearer overview with more rapid and intuitive registration of the relevant traffic situation.

The vehicle and its multimedia system, as well as all applications and contents, can be completely remote-controlled using the Remote Convenience functions. This e.g. means that via the vehicle's specific homepage, authorised individuals have access at all times to information such as the fuel level, next scheduled service or fuel consumption. Just as easily, a home PC or of course a smartphone can be used for remote configuration of the onboard navigation or entertainment system, and to select individual interior temperature settings for each seat.

New assistance systems: recognising dangers, travelling in style

With the help of innovative driver assistance systems, the touring saloon of the future defuses even "invisible" hazards and relieves driver stress in many standard situations. If the driver requires, the F 125! is able to carry out frequently occurring driving manoeuvres autonomously.

Advanced Driving Assist allows lane-changes on multi-lane, one-way roads, and in a further development stage even automatic overtaking manoeuvres. Thanks to radio-based networking with the environment, so-called Car-to-X communi-cation, the F 125! is also able to exchange information with other vehicles, a specially equipped infrastructure incl. traffic lights or warning signs and traffic control centres. Specific applications might include a warning of approaching emergency service vehicles, well before the driver can see or hear them, a reminder that other vehicles have the right of way at obscure road junctions, or obstacles on the road.

Amazon tablet coming in November for $250?


Much ink has been spilled in the rumor mill about a coming Amazonian tablet, and now those rumors look to be confirmed. TechCrunch has apparently gotten some time with Amazon's forthcoming slate, and reports that it has a 7-inch, backlit color capacitive screen and is bereft of physical buttons. Word on the web is that the hardware is already good to go, and Amazon is making the last few software tweaks before it goes on sale this November. The tablet is running a heavily skinned version of Android that was developed without any help from the folks in Mountain View. It apparently has a Cover Flow-esque UI, and is deeply integrated with all of Amazon's services (Cloud Player, Instant Video Player, Appstore, and of course the Kindle app). Best of all, it will reportedly cost a scant $250 -- not quite TouchPad territory, but well underneath the iPad's $500 price. Let the next great tablet war begin.

Audi announces A2 electric concept car, uses lasers to ensure safety of future humans

Lasers make everything better, including (but not limited to): microphones, kidneys and Audi's electric A2 concept. This newest flight of fancy uses a laser diode as the rear fog lamp, which projects a red triangle onto the road to let other drivers know you're there. The German car-maker has tricked out the rest of the EV's lighting system as well by implementing matrix beam technology using LEDs and microreflectors -- giving it high resolution, non-glaring beams and intelligent tail lights that change in intensity based on weather conditions. Claiming other state-of-the-art features like gesture controls instead of keys, and brake lights that glow brighter the harder you press, it sounds like this would be a pretty sweet ride -- if it ever makes it to market. No word on the other, insignificant details (ya know, like what actually powers the thing) but there's plenty more about the car's lighting system in the PR after the break.

With the electric-only powertrain of the A2 concept, Audi is offering another peek into the future of electric mobility at the 64th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. The technical study features a classic, premium-standard space concept that offers plenty of room for four people.

The Audi A2 concept is just 3.80 meters (12.47 ft) long, 1.69 meters (5.54 ft) wide and 1.49 meters (4.89 ft) high; even so, it makes an elegant, powerful and sporty impression on the street. Its clean appearance concentrates on the essentials; all details are subtle but shaped for visual impact. The dark glass roof of the white-painted show car switches to transparency with the push of a button.

With its headlights, Audi is presenting the next phase in LED technology, known as matrix beam. A package of LEDs and microreflectors generate a high-resolution and non-glaring high-beam light. Delicate daytime running light fibers frame the highly efficient LED low-beam light module. Intelligent tail lights adapt their illumination to the visibility conditions. The rear fog light, produced by laser diodes, is seen as a beam of light in fog and projects a red triangle onto the road as a warning.

The dynamic light runs below the edge of the window from the front to the rear of the A2 concept – a band of light that contains a multitude of innovative, dynamic light functions. Integrated approach sensors detect the owner and unlock the doors via gesture control. While driving, the dynamic light functions as a continuous side marker light. If the car's indicator is activated, light impulses run throughout the entire band of light.

In addition, a red bar of light flows forward from the tail lights when braking and demonstrates the strength of the brakes intuitively for other road users.

The dynamic light is also located in the cockpit area of the show car, structured in two separate arches. Like the entire interior, the dash panel has a light and clean look and intuitive controls. The driver manages many important features via touch-control areas on the inside of the steering wheel. Two additional control surfaces fold up at the driver's right when starting the vehicle. An open profile serves as the steering column; a seven-inch display and two secondary displays are located at its end.

The Audi A2 concept has a flat interior floorboard. The center console is attached to the driver's seat; the rear console extends forward between the two rear seats. The four individual seats add lightness, and there is storage space under the fold-up seat cushions. There is room between the rear seats for a city bicycle with its front wheel removed. The load area has two levels; a frame with functional nets creates the upper level.

The colors and materials in the interior support the impression of lightness and functionality. The large areas from the door top shoulders to the floor bear a new and innovative covering material made of polyurethane with a neoprene surface feel; a ribbed material made from recycled polyester covers the central floor area. The seat shells are made with a plastic blow molding technique. Aluminum elements create highlights the cockpit.

Windows 8 Start Menu caught on camera, shows off high-contrast design

Most anyone who's paid attention knows Windows 8 will feature some fancy tweaks, including a revamped Windows Explorer and new copy, move and rename functions. But now Redmond's given us a blink-and-you'll-miss-it preview of the new Start Menu, in a video about accessing ISO and VHD files in the new OS. Apple’s New “Spaceship” Campus Larger Than Pentagon

A few days after WWDC 2011, Steve Jobs revealed Apple’s plans for a massive new campus in Cupertino, CA known as the “Spaceship”. Now, a new report*from Mac Observer suggests that the new campus is larger than the U.S. Pentagon and New York City’s Empire State Building.



The diameter of Apple’s new campus will be 1,615 feet, which will span farther than the Pentagon’s diameter of 1,566 feet. Also, the distance across the massive circle is greater**than the height of the Empire State Building, at 1,250 feet.

Mac Observer laid other objects over the plans for Apple’s campus to provide a better perspective. The image shows the with a cruise ship, U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier, a blimp, a World War II battleship, and a supertanker laid over them. Also, the*”Spaceship” stretches farther across all of those objects. The longest object shown in the illustration is a supertanker at 1,504 feet.



Apple’s new campus will occupy about 2.8 million square feet, and will include an auditorium that would hold 1,000 people, and new research facilities including 300,000 square feet. The facility will be able to support up to 13,000 employees.

The company still must obtain formal approval, but Cupertino Mayor Gilbert Wong said*there is “no chance” that the council would not approve the structure. If all goes according to plan, Apple plants to open the new campus in 2015.

Apple copycat 'hiPhone 5' comes calling in China


Shanghai: The newest version of Apple Inc's popular iPhone has already hit the Chinese market - the fake market that is. The 'hiPhone 5' is selling for as little as 200 yuan ($31) on China's top e-commerce platform Taobao, which is owned by Alibaba Group.
But one has to pay around 800 yuan for a more "genuine" one, according to some shop clerks at a mobile phone market in Shanghai.
"Look at this. It's not the same as the 300-400 yuan ones," Shanghai-based daily Metro Express quoted a clerk as saying, pointing to one originally priced at 850 yuan.
The 'hiPhone 5' is based on leaked images of the yet-to-be-launched iPhone 5 and is thinner and with less rounded edges than the existing iPhone 4, according to the newspaper. However, it is extremely light, almost like a plastic toy, like most pirated mobile phones, it said.
Western governments have repeatedly criticised China for widespread violation of intellectual property rights, but pirated goods from branded watches, to bags and computer software can be easily found in shops.
Last month, an American blogger set off a media storm after she posted pictures of an elaborate fake Apple Store in Kunming, selling genuine if unauthorized iPhones, Macbooks and other widely popular Apple products.
Reuters also uncovered a look-a-like of the Swedish furniture giant Ikea in the southwestern Chinese city.
Apple, which is expected to roll out the latest version of the iPhone 5 smartphone within a few months, sold a record 20.34 million iPhones during the last quarter, even though its newest model is over a year old.
